British cyclist Matthew Brennan secured his third stage victory of the Vuelta a Espana in Lorca, winning the stage 11 sprint finish ahead of France's Bryan Coquard and Belgium's Jordi Meeus.
The victory brought the young British sprinter level with Slovenian star Tadej Pogacar on three stage wins in this year's race, coming on the eve of a major mountain climb to Calar Alto that could reshape the general classification standings.
Brennan prevailed in the bunch sprint following strong lead-out support from his teammate Wout van Aert, who launched the final acceleration while defending his lead in the points classification.
Brennan raised three fingers as he crossed the finish line in Lorca to celebrate his third stage triumph of the three-week Grand Tour.
Sprint Duel with Pogacar
The early phase of this Vuelta a Espana was dominated by a direct duel between Pogacar and Brennan across the opening week. For every victory claimed by the Slovenian on the climbs, the British rider responded with a sprint triumph.
The two riders shared stage victories across the first five completed stages of the race. A total of six stages were originally scheduled for that opening stretch, but the third stage with a finish at Font Romeu in the Pyrenees was cancelled.
Pogacar dominated whenever the road turned uphill, while Brennan proved unbeatable in flat sprint finishes. That pattern of alternating victories between the two riders continued until Andreas Leknessund won at Valdelinares to break their shared streak.
Pogacar Crash and Recovery
The shared dominance came to an abrupt end last Saturday during stage 8 when Pogacar crashed after tripping over an object on the road. The Slovenian suffered a broken collarbone and a fractured cervical vertebra, forcing him to abandon the race.
On the day Pogacar withdrew, Brennan also suffered a setback during the stage finish at Xeraco beach on the Mediterranean coast. A late crash on the approach disrupted the sprint train, leaving Brennan to finish in tenth place.
Brennan had to wait until stage 11 in Lorca to reclaim top spot on the podium. The sprint field in Lorca was reduced following the earlier retirements of sprinters Mads Pedersen and Kaden Groves.
Van Aert Lead-Out Support
Brennan relied on strong team support to deliver his victory in Lorca, with Christophe Laporte and Van Aert driving the pace into the final meters. Laporte and Van Aert guided Brennan through the dangerous final section before releasing him for the finish.
Van Aert continued sprinting through the line to secure valuable points in the points classification. The Belgian rider wears the green jersey as leader of the points classification and intends to keep the jersey all the way to Granada.
Brennan praised Van Aert after the finish, describing his teammate as a role model who always fulfills his role and remains fully committed to his function within the squad.
Mountain Test Ahead
Lorca hosted the flat stage finish before the race heads into the high mountains. Stage 12 features the climb to the Calar Alto astronomical observatory in the Sierra de los Filabres, where overall contenders will compete on steep gradients.
With Pogacar out of the race and three stage victories already secured, Brennan leaves the flat roads of Lorca having established himself as one of the standout sprinters of this Vuelta.
