The Minnesota Vikings have officially named Kyler Murray as their starting quarterback for the 2026 season following training camp on Tuesday. Head coach Kevin O'Connell confirmed the decision after practice following initial reports by ESPN's Adam Schefter.
Murray signed with Minnesota from the Arizona Cardinals last year and will lead the team into the upcoming season, pushing last year's starter JJ McCarthy to the bench. O'Connell stated that the franchise set out to build a competitive environment during the offseason.
"We did name Kyler Murray our starting quarterback," O'Connell confirmed to reporters. "From the outset of the offseason we've been intentional, open about the goal of creating a competitive environment filled with wildly capable players that could then elevate our quarterback room."
Backup Role for McCarthy
Despite losing the starting job, O'Connell assured Vikings fans that the third-year quarterback will still be part of the system. When specifically asked if McCarthy is the team's backup, O'Connell confirmed that he is.
"Nothing changes as far as J.J. being an incredibly important member of our quarterback room and our team," O'Connell said. "Yes, you'll see him still take a ton of reps today."
McCarthy Development and Contract Details
McCarthy was drafted by the Vikings in 2024 with the tenth overall pick after winning a national championship with Michigan. Minnesota traded up to select him after NFL scouts were sold on his potential, though he never put up large numbers in college.
After missing his entire rookie season due to an injury, McCarthy started ten games in his second year in the league. In his first season of playing, he threw 12 interceptions and 11 touchdowns.
O'Connell is not ready to label the McCarthy experiment a failure. "He's a young player with a bunch of outstanding things in his future," the coach said. "The immediate result wasn't what he wanted, but he's going to be ready to go and improve."
The Vikings may plan for McCarthy to continue growing while on the bench. Murray signed a one-year, $13 million contract with Minnesota, giving him the ability to leave in free agency this offseason, which makes McCarthy's development this season all the more important.
