Faten Ben Amar El Azizi, a 20-year-old footballer who played for Maghreb Atlético Tetuán in Morocco, drowned while attempting to cross into Ceuta, the Spanish enclave on the North African coast.
She was one of at least 67 migrants killed attempting the crossing in recent days, according to Spain’s Interior Ministry.
Her club said she had not been seeking glory or adventure, but a better life and a future on the other side of the border. It described her dream as broken before it had even begun.
The Union Marocaine des Footballeurs Professionnels also paid tribute to her. The organisation’s president, Mustapha El Hadaoui, along with all union members, expressed condolences to her family, friends, teammates, Moghreb de Tanger, and the broader Moroccan football community.
