Neymar's footballing future is uncertain, shortly after the end of the World Cup and his retirement from Brazil's national team, for which he finished as the country's all-time top scorer and the player with the most assists in its history.

Neymar: "Likely to retire at the end of the year"

The 34-year-old has returned to his home country and resumed his duties at Santos, the club he is contracted to until December 2026. Speaking at a charity event held by his foundation, he left open the possibility of stepping away from football at the end of the year.

Asked directly about the prospect, Neymar said every scenario was possible. He also addressed criticism he has faced over his physical condition, saying he feels very good physically.

What Neymar said about his plans

Neymar said he did not know how much longer he would keep playing. He said he intended to finish out his contract with Santos and think about his future afterward, whether that meant staying at the club, leaving, retiring, or continuing to play. He said he genuinely did not know what he would do.

The comments were shared by Brazilian outlet Futmais, on its Menino Fut account on X, on August 4, 2026.
