The Norwegian Football Federation is calling for FIFA president Gianni Infantino to resign immediately, federation president Lise Klaveness announced at a press conference. Despite the withdrawal of Infantino's commercial company project, the Norwegian federation remains fully committed to pushing him out of office.
Klaveness said Infantino no longer holds the institutional confidence required to lead FIFA stably during the current period and stated that there is no turning back. Infantino has held office since 2016 and remains the sole declared candidate, needing a majority of 211 member federation votes for re-election next March.
Potential succession and ethics cases
Klaveness told AFP that Infantino can no longer unify the organization given the current chaos. Former FIFA president Sepp Blatter raised Klaveness as a potential successor, writing on X that she was the only official to maintain a clear stance and that FIFA should be led by a woman. Responding to AFP on Friday, the 45-year-old Norwegian lawyer said the federation was not at that stage, emphasizing that the focus remains on organizational issues rather than specific individuals.
The Norwegian federation has also decided to refer three matters to FIFA's ethics committee. These involve the aborted plan to involve private investors, the cancellation of Folarin Balogun's suspension at the World Cup following an intervention by Donald Trump, and FIFA awarding a peace prize to the American president. In addition, the federation will request a full review of the reforms Infantino promised to implement.
