Olympiacos, playing under the banner of Olympiacos/Omilos Xyni, beat AEK 35-24 on Monday to win the men's handball Super Cup for the fifth consecutive year, opening the curtain on the 2026-2027 season.
Ricardo Trillini's team led 17-9 at halftime in the final, which was played at the indoor arena in Kamatero. Both sides went into the match short of ideal competitive sharpness, since the Handball Premier league season is not scheduled to begin until the following Saturday, September 19.
Ticketless final under special arrangements
The sixth men's Super Cup was classified as a special-management event, meaning no tickets were sold to the public. A limited number of invitations was issued instead, covering the needs of the Hellenic Handball Federation and the two finalists.
Before the final kicked off, the federation handed out awards to the top performers of last season. The winners had been chosen by the coaches and team captains of the Handball Premier and were first announced at the league's fixture draw.
Sixth final in Super Cup history
The competition dates back to 1999, when Ionikos Nea Filadelfeias won the inaugural title by beating ASE Doukas 26-20. The Super Cup then lay dormant for 23 years before returning in 2022, when Olympiacos/Omilos Xyni defeated AESCH Pylaia 30-24 to claim the trophy for the first time.
Olympiacos has not lost the Super Cup since. Monday's win extended a run that has now seen the Piraeus club beat AEK in the final on three occasions, in 2023, 2025 and 2026.
Attention turns to the league
With the Super Cup secured, both clubs now shift their focus to the Handball Premier. Olympiacos, the reigning league champion, opens the new season away to Athinaikos, while AEK travels to Drama to face the local club.
