Pavlos Pantelidis underwent successful surgery in the early hours of Saturday after sustaining a serious ankle injury in a Panathinaikos preseason friendly, with the club’s medical staff estimating he will be sidelined for four to six months.
The 24-year-old international attacking midfielder was hurt during Panathinaikos’s training match against Athens Kallithea in Koropi following a heavy challenge near the corner flag. Tests carried out on Friday evening confirmed a shattered fibula, a rupture of the inferior tibiofibular syndesmosis, and a rupture of the deltoid ligament, with no fracture to the tibia.
The operation was performed by Panathinaikos head of medical staff Dionysis Hissas alongside team doctor Haris Lalos, completing just after 1:30 a.m. on Saturday.
The club said recovery would be monitored continuously and that the target, based on current assessments, is for Pantelidis to return to competitive action in early 2027. Teammates, coaching staff, and the wider Panathinaikos organisation expressed their support and wished him a swift return.
