Sporting CP midfielder Pedro Gonçalves has completed a transfer to Italian side Fiorentina on an initial loan deal with an obligatory buy clause, following the breakdown of a potential move to Saudi Arabia. The 28-year-old Portuguese international flew to Italy on Tuesday afternoon accompanied by his wife and has already been registered ahead of a potential Serie A debut this weekend.
Fiorentina will pay an immediate loan fee of 2.5 million euros to secure the playmaker for the season. The agreement between the two clubs includes a mandatory purchase clause of 22.5 million euros if specified performance objectives are met, bringing the overall financial package for the transaction to 25 million euros, according to details disclosed by Portuguese broadcaster CMTV.
The deal also triggers a financial windfall for fellow Portuguese club Famalicão, who retained a 10 percent economic stake in the player when selling him to Sporting. The Lisbon side paid a total of 13.5 million euros to acquire Gonçalves from Famalicão, starting with an initial 6.5 million euro investment. Famalicão will receive 2.25 million euros once the mandatory purchase clause is formally activated.
Dressing room conflict and falling out with management
The transfer resolves a growing issue inside the Sporting dressing room at the Estádio José Alvalade in Lisbon. Gonçalves, widely known as Pote, had been excluded from head coach Rui Borges's first-team plans for the current campaign and was forced to train separately from the rest of the squad. The player was also involved in internal friction with teammate Luis Suárez.
Tensions between player and club escalated after Gonçalves admitted that he had played with restraint during the closing stages of last season. Coach Rui Borges subsequently publicly accused both Gonçalves and midfielder Daniel Bragança of becoming complacent, leaving both players without a place in the squad. Gonçalves had previously been targeted by Saudi Pro League outfit Al Ittihad in Jeddah, but negotiations failed to materialize into a deal.
Gonçalves leaves Sporting after a highly successful six-year spell in Lisbon, during which he won seven major trophies, including three Primeira Liga national championships. Across 239 official appearances in all competitions for the club, the attacking midfielder registered 97 goals and 58 assists. He now moves to Florence to join Fiorentina, a club where current Benfica president Rui Costa famously enjoyed a distinguished playing career in Serie A.
Daniel Bragança seals move to Torino
Midfielder Daniel Bragança has also departed Sporting for Italian football, joining Serie A side Torino on loan with a mandatory purchase condition. The total financial value of the transfer for the Turin-based club is significantly lower than that of his former teammate, reaching up to 4.5 million euros in total.
Sporting will receive an upfront loan fee of 1 million euros from Torino for Bragança. The agreement contains an additional 1 million euros tied to performance objectives, alongside a mandatory purchase clause valued at 2.5 million euros that depends on fulfilling specific sporting criteria. Bragança could face Gonçalves immediately, as Fiorentina are scheduled to host Torino in league action on Saturday.
Luis Suárez denies departure rumors
Meanwhile, Sporting forward Luis Suárez has strongly refuted reports claiming he is attempting to force a move away from the Lisbon club before the transfer window closes. Responding to a post published by the football media page O Futebol, the 28-year-old Colombian international striker dismissed the speculation on his social media accounts, labeling the story as another summer lie.
The player's wife, Carolina Rubio, also responded online to a separate claim in the same publication alleging she had shared private text messages exchanged between Sporting players with other wives of team members. She commented publicly on the matter, writing that she believed reporters already had other people to talk about this week.
