Rory McIlroy and world number one Scottie Scheffler lead the race for the 2026 PGA Tour Player of the Year award at East Lake.
The contest for the prestigious Jack Nicklaus Award, which is decided by a vote of PGA Tour members, is shaping up as one of the closest and most open races in recent years as players prepare for the season-ending Tour Championship.
A group of five multiple winners on tour this season, including Scheffler, Wyndham Clark, Matt Fitzpatrick, Chris Gotterup and Cameron Young, are seeking to claim the honour. Victory at the FedExCup finale at East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta could prove decisive before the official candidate shortlist is revealed in the autumn.
Rory McIlroy Contends for Fourth Jack Nicklaus Award
McIlroy insisted it is "all to play for" in the Player of the Year race, despite previously dismissing his own chances of taking the crown. Ahead of the BMW Championship, the Northern Irishman said there was "no chance" he should be considered, even after successfully defending his Masters title in April.
However, McIlroy remained firmly in the mix after securing third place at the BMW Championship, finishing behind tournament winner Wyndham Clark. McIlroy has already won the PGA Tour Player of the Year award three times in his career.
The four-time major winner produced several impressive performances throughout 2026. Alongside his Masters victory at Augusta National, McIlroy recorded a tied-second finish at the Genesis Invitational, earned top-ten finishes at both the PGA Championship and the Genesis Scottish Open, and hit a 403-yard drive to within 10 feet on the ninth hole at The Open.
Scottie Scheffler Targets Fifth Straight Player of the Year Title
World number one Scottie Scheffler is aiming for a fifth consecutive PGA Tour Player of the Year award, having won the vote in each of the past four seasons. Scheffler enjoyed another standout year on tour, claiming two victories.
His first title of 2026 arrived at The American Express in January, followed by a second victory at the FedEx St. Jude Championship in August. Although Scheffler accumulated fewer tournament wins than in 2025, his high level of play kept him at the top of the world rankings.
Consistency was the hallmark of Scheffler's campaign, as he finished as runner-up five times on the PGA Tour in 2026. He also made history by becoming the first player in PGA Tour history to log three consecutive solo second-place finishes, doing so at The Masters, the RBC Heritage and The Cadillac Championship.
Matt Fitzpatrick and Wyndham Clark Enjoy Career Seasons
Matt Fitzpatrick put together his most successful PGA Tour season to date, earning three victories and placing as runner-up twice. The 2022 US Open champion was denied victory at The Players at TPC Sawgrass by Cameron Young, but bounced back immediately by winning The Valspar Championship in his next start.
Fitzpatrick followed up that victory with back-to-back titles, winning the RBC Heritage and then partnering with his brother Alex Fitzpatrick to win the Zurich Classic of New Orleans. The double victory marked a highlight in the English golfer's career.
Wyndham Clark also recorded his finest PGA Tour campaign by winning three tournaments in 2026. The American opened his winning tally at the CJ Cup in May before capturing his second career major at the US Open at Shinnecock Hills, where outstanding putting helped him defeat Sam Burns by a single stroke. Clark later earned his third title of the year at the BMW Championship.
Cameron Young and Chris Gotterup Join Contenders
Cameron Young added the second and third PGA Tour victories of his career in 2026. Young outlasted Fitzpatrick by one stroke to win The Players in March, and later outscored Scheffler to capture The Cadillac Championship in May. Young also finished second at The Open in July, ending just one shot behind winner Ryan Fox.
Twenty-seven-year-old Chris Gotterup enjoyed a career-best PGA Tour season with three victories. Gotterup won the season-opening Sony Open in Hawaii in January, defeated Hideki Matsuyama in a play-off to win the WM Phoenix Open in February, and added a third title at the John Deere Classic later in the season.
FedExCup Finale at East Lake Golf Club
The PGA Tour season reaches its climax at the Tour Championship at East Lake Golf Club, where only the top 30 players in the standings qualify to compete for the FedExCup trophy and a $10 million first prize. Live television coverage of all four rounds begins Thursday at 5 p.m. on Sky Sports Golf.
