Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg has been stripped of the Marseille captaincy after rejecting a £15 million move to Newcastle United despite an agreement between the clubs.
The 31-year-old Danish international midfielder appeared close to completing a return to the Premier League before making an abrupt U-turn. Marseille had accepted Newcastle's £15 million offer, but Hojbjerg decided he preferred to stay in southern France.
The loss of the captaincy was confirmed when the official team sheet was published for Friday's match against Spanish side Atletico Madrid. Hojbjerg was included in Marseille's starting line-up, but the captain's armband was instead handed to United States international Timothy Weah.
Marseille owner Frank McCourt is furious with Hojbjerg over the collapsed transfer, as previously reported by Daily Mail Sport. Reports in France indicate the American businessman remains irritated with the midfielder, who is now unlikely to be reinstated as club skipper.
Financial strain and rejected transfer
Marseille have faced growing pressure to reduce their wage bill and ease ongoing financial difficulties. The Ligue 1 club had viewed the prospective £15 million fee from Newcastle as a vital financial windfall during the summer transfer window.
Hojbjerg's decision to stay has placed him in an awkward position, leaving him open to criticism from club executives despite demonstrating his loyalty to the French team. However, the former Tottenham Hotspur midfielder is evaluating his options, with Italian Serie A giants AC Milan also interested in signing him if his situation at Marseille deteriorates further.
Newcastle had identified the experienced Denmark international as an ideal midfield organiser to anchor the squad. New manager Matthias Jaissle had targeted Hojbjerg as a central piece of his tactical plans, and initial talks had progressed smoothly before the player changed his mind.
Managerial turnover and squad changes
The captaincy conflict adds to an unstable period for Marseille, who finished fifth in Ligue 1 last season following significant internal turmoil. The Mediterranean club parted ways with Italian manager Roberto de Zerbi during the campaign before appointing Habib Beye, who subsequently left at the end of the term.
Former Lyon and Rennes head coach Bruno Genesio has since taken charge as Marseille manager. Genesio has inherited a difficult environment and is already forced to manage growing dressing room unrest early in his tenure.
The failed transfer comes amid a tumultuous summer for Newcastle United. The North East club has endured major squad depletion, selling club captain Bruno Guimaraes to Arsenal, star winger Anthony Gordon to Barcelona, and Italian midfielder Sandro Tonali to Tottenham Hotspur.
Newcastle also lost manager Eddie Howe, who stepped down on July 31. Howe had previously saved the club from Premier League relegation, guided them into the UEFA Champions League, and ended a 56-year major trophy drought. Newcastle have suffered additional transfer set-backs, missing out on top targets Spanish winger Victor Munoz, who joined Liverpool, and Swiss midfielder Johan Manzambi, who signed for Aston Villa.
