Premier League clubs spent more than €4.1 billion on player transfers during the summer window, setting an all-time market investment record. Figures compiled by data tracking website Transfermarkt show English top-flight teams spent €4,112.5 million on new signings.
That expenditure far exceeds the combined total of Europe's other four major domestic competitions in the big five leagues. Teams in Spain, Italy, Germany and France spent €3,309.4 million combined over the same period.
Manchester City transfer spend
Manchester City became the first club in football history to spend more than €500 million in a single transfer window. The club overhauled its squad under new manager Enzo Maresca, who took charge following the departure of Pep Guardiola.
Midfielder Enzo Fernández arrived from Chelsea for a fee of €146 million, setting a new transfer record based on euro valuations. His price matched the £125 million fee paid by Liverpool one year ago to acquire striker Alexander Isak.
Manchester City rebuilt their midfield following the departure of Rodri to Barcelona. The club completed its three most expensive additions by signing Elliot Anderson for €135 million and Bouaddi for €95 million.
European league spending breakdown
English clubs dominated the global market, accounting for eight of the ten highest-spending clubs in the world during the window. Only two non-English teams managed to enter the top ten ranking.
Real Madrid ranked eighth overall after spending €225 million, while Barcelona finished tenth with an expenditure of €184 million. Despite having two clubs in the top ten, Spain's La Liga ranked fourth overall among the big five leagues with total investments of €755.3 million.
Elsewhere in English football, domestic competition continued as Tottenham Hotspur, Newcastle United and Everton secured places in the round of 32 of the English League Cup.
Serie A and Bundesliga totals
Italy's Serie A recorded the second highest overall spend among European leagues at €1,163.2 million. AC Milan, now coached by Ruben Amorim, spent €165.05 million, while Juventus invested €164.35 million to drive the Italian total.
Germany's Bundesliga finished third in overall spending with €783.8 million. Perennial champions Bayern Munich exercised financial restraint, accounting for €107 million of that total.
France's Ligue 1 rounded out the big five European leagues in fifth place with €607.1 million. Paris Saint-Germain also showed restraint, spending €152 million during the summer.
Individual honors in England also made headlines as Manchester United midfielder Bruno Fernandes was named player of the season in the Premier League by local media.
