Puerto Rico was awarded the gold medal in women’s softball at the XXV Central American and Caribbean Games in Santo Domingo after rain made the field at the Juan Pablo Duarte Sports Complex unplayable and forced the cancellation of all medal-round games.
Officials waited six hours and 40 minutes from the scheduled 3:00 p.m. start time before calling a technical meeting and invoking tournament regulations to assign final standings based on the existing table.
Puerto Rico, which had gone undefeated through the preliminary round and the super round, held first place in the standings and received the gold medal under that rule. The United States Virgin Islands, which had advanced to the championship game, was awarded silver.
The Dominican Republic, the host nation, was placed third and received bronze. Mexico finished fourth. The two scheduled games for the day, which would have seen the Dominican Republic face Mexico for bronze and Puerto Rico meet the U.S. Virgin Islands in the gold-medal final, were never played.
Puerto Rico went 5-0 across both rounds of competition. The U.S. Virgin Islands went 3-0 in the preliminary round and 1-1 in the super round. The Dominican Republic finished the tournament 2-3.
Cuba, Venezuela, Guatemala and El Salvador finished fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth respectively.
