Rangers beat Celtic 3-0 at Ibrox on Sunday to reach the semi-finals of the Premier Sports Cup, with Dan Neil scoring twice in a one-sided derby victory for manager Derek McInnes.
Kevin Kelsy added the other goal for Rangers, who outplayed their city rivals from start to finish and gave goalkeeper Ivor Pandur almost nothing to do at the other end.
McInnes was appointed Rangers' 10th permanent manager in 14 years in June, taking charge at a club whose recent managers had all struggled to get the better of Celtic. Sunday's win, following four earlier league victories that had come in less convincing fashion, marked his side's most emphatic result of the season so far.
Rangers took the lead midway through the first half when Ryan Naderi nipped the ball away from Cameron Carter-Vickers and found Kelsy. The forward laid the ball off to Neil, who was lurking on the edge of the penalty box, and the midfielder's right-foot strike had too much power and accuracy for Celtic goalkeeper Sam Johnstone.
It was Neil's first goal for Rangers since joining from Sunderland, and his display was one of several across the side that suggested a marked improvement since the difficult opening weeks of the campaign.
Kelsy doubles the lead
Kelsy made it 2-0 just before the hour mark. James Penrice, effective throughout at left-back, delivered a composed cross from the left, and with Celtic's central defenders occupied by Naderi, Kelsy floated to the back post and drilled the ball beyond Johnstone for his first goal since joining the club.
Manny Fernandez thought he had made it three when he turned home a set piece, but the goal was ruled out for offside. Haissem Hassan, sent on for Celtic at half-time, fired just over after cutting in from the right, but by then Celtic already looked beaten.
Neil seals it late on
Rangers made the win certain with 15 minutes remaining. The ball fell to Neil on the edge of the box after a touch from Carter-Vickers, and his curling strike beat Johnstone to send Ibrox wild for a third time.
Celtic manager Martin O'Neill, who lost eight derbies during his first spell in charge of the Glasgow club, saw his side suffer their first domestic defeat of the season. Callum McGregor, Kieran Tierney and Carter-Vickers all struggled among Celtic's established players, while new arrivals Johnstone, Camilo Duran, Mika Baur and Kasper Hogh made little impact. Sebastian Tounekti was withdrawn at half-time and replaced by Hassan.
Errors compounded Celtic's day
Celtic's afternoon was littered with mistakes. McGregor, usually reliable in derby matches, played a slack cross-field pass straight to Kelsy early on, while Fernandez's error at the back for Rangers was one of the few Celtic managed to punish, with Duran firing straight at Pandur. Pandur later made a flying header to clear a dangerous ball intended for Duran.
Celtic also struggled from set pieces, with two corners from Kim Minsu failing to clear the first man and a free kick sailing over everyone. Olwethu Makhanya was booked for Rangers after fouling Hassan.
With Yang Hyun-jun unavailable, O'Neill turned to Tounekti on the left, a selection that raised eyebrows given the forward's lack of a final ball in a recent match in Perth. Auston Trusty was left out of the starting eleven in favour of Liam Scales.
What happens next
Rangers and Celtic meet again in the Premiership at Celtic Park next Sunday, the first of at least four fixtures between the sides still to come this season. Sunday's result leaves Rangers through to the semi-finals of the Premier Sports Cup.
