Real Betis beat Real Madrid 1-0 in La Liga on Friday, with substitute Troy Parrott scoring the winning goal in the 81st minute, twelve minutes after coming off the bench.
Goalkeeper Alvaro Valles then saved a stoppage-time penalty from Kylian Mbappe to protect the lead. The defeat was Real Madrid's first of the season and could leave the club three points behind leaders Barcelona in the table once the round is complete, according to the report.
Before kickoff, both sides had reason for confidence. Real Betis sat seventh in the table after taking six points from their opening three matches. Real Madrid, coached by Jose Mourinho, had collected nine points and a goal difference of 10-2, putting them second. Fans had rated the team's opening matches under Mourinho positively, and Real Madrid went into the game in Seville looking to add another three points.
Real Madrid go close before the break
Real Madrid created the better early chances. In the 12th minute, Dean Huijsen forced a strong save from Betis goalkeeper Alvaro Valles. Moments later, Arda Guler swept a ball across the box for Vinicius Junior, whose effort struck the post with the score still 0-0.
Betis pushed back, with winger Antony, the home side's most active player, testing Real Madrid from distance. The first half was marred by a collision between Betis defenders Diego Llorente and Marc Roca, who clashed heads and left the pitch bleeding. Llorente could not continue and is believed to have broken his nose.
Real Madrid came closest to breaking through in the 43rd minute, when Vinicius picked out Mbappe inside the box, only for the Frenchman to be blocked twice by Betis defenders. Jude Bellingham then had two efforts, one of them saved by Valles, before Huijsen struck the crossbar in the final moments of the half. The teams went in level at 0-0, with Real Madrid left to rue the missed chances.
Parrott breaks the deadlock
Real Madrid's attacking threat disappeared after the break. Mourinho's side could not create clear openings, and even when Mbappe got the ball inside the Betis box, his shot was too weak to trouble Valles.
Real Betis, by contrast, appeared to have settled the game down without pressing for a goal themselves. Then, in the 81st minute, they took the lead. Troy Parrott, who had been on the pitch for twelve minutes, found the net after Betis won a corner. Valles' Real Madrid counterpart, Thibaut Courtois, had already produced a strong save from a header by Nelson Deossy from that corner, but he could not keep out Parrott moments later.
Mbappe's penalty saved in stoppage time
Trailing for the first time all evening, Real Madrid pushed forward with more urgency, echoing their first-half approach. Mbappe struck the ball against the junction of the post and crossbar, and substitute Carlos Espi then put the ball in the net, only for the goal to be ruled out for offside after a VAR review.
In stoppage time, Vinicius was fouled inside the penalty area, and Mbappe stepped up to take the resulting penalty. Valles saved his shot. There was a brief suggestion the penalty might be retaken, but the referee ruled that Betis defender Marc Bartra had not encroached into the box too early.
Real Madrid continued to press for an equaliser in the closing minutes, but Valles produced another crucial save, this time denying Espi. Valles was widely credited as the main reason Betis held on to win 1-0.
Real Betis 1-0 Real Madrid (0-0 at half-time). Goal: Parrott, 81'.
