Real Madrid defender Raul Asencio has been banned from driving for eight months and fined £12,350 after being convicted of drink-driving in Gran Canaria.
The 23-year-old footballer pleaded guilty during a speedy court trial held three days after police stopped his vehicle at a checkpoint in San Bartolome de Tirajana, located in the south of the island. Officers pulled over his car, a Porsche Macan GTS, at around 6.30am on August 16.
Details of the conviction emerged on Wednesday after being confirmed by court sources in Gran Canaria, where the player was born. Asencio, who is currently out injured, recorded a breath test reading of 0.90 milligrams of alcohol per litre of exhaled breath, which is nearly four times Spain's legal drink-driving limit of 0.25 milligrams per litre.
Asencio plays as a defender for Real Madrid, the Spanish football club based in Madrid and commonly known as Los Blancos. The club competes in La Liga, the top professional division in Spanish football. The Porsche Macan GTS driven during the incident is a luxury high-performance compact SUV produced by German automaker Porsche. Gran Canaria is one of Spain's Canary Islands located in the Atlantic Ocean, with San Bartolome de Tirajana operating as a major resort municipality in the south.
Upcoming sex tape trial
The road ban represents the latest legal complication for the footballer, who is scheduled to go on trial on Thursday over the alleged sharing of an explicit video involving a minor.
Authorities charged Asencio with sharing the sex tape and distributing intimate footage without consent. However, both alleged victims in the case have since withdrawn their formal complaints against the defender, paving the way for a probable acquittal.
Public prosecutors continue to demand a prison sentence of two and a half years upon conviction. Prosecution lawyers indicated they will withdraw all charges against Asencio if the alleged victims ratify in court the apologies he offered them during the judicial investigation.
Academy players investigation
Three of Asencio's former team-mates, Ferran Ruiz, Juan Rodriguez and Andres Garcia, are also set to stand trial in connection with related allegations. The charges relate to an incident on June 15, 2023, at a beach club in Gran Canaria.
Ruiz, Rodriguez and Garcia face accusations of recording and distributing sexual videos involving a minor and another woman. Police arrested the three then-Real Madrid academy players in September 2023 following allegations that they had consensual sexual relations with two females but filmed them without their consent.
Asencio is not accused of being involved in the alleged beach club incident itself. Police initially interviewed him as a witness in connection with the case before he became part of the formal investigation. In May 2025, the Real Madrid defender released a statement fiercely denying all allegations made against him.
