Russian football official calls for Infantino to be ousted

A former member of the Russian Football Union’s ethics committee has called for FIFA president Gianni Infantino to face a vote of no confidence and not be re-elected.

Andrei Sozin, speaking to the publication Podyom, said Infantino had completely tarnished himself and was incapable of leading football, arguing that the president had yielded to pressure from the American administration and capitulated. Sozin added that Infantino should leave his post if he wanted to save face, and suggested the official could go on to head a large organization based in the United States.

The next FIFA presidential election is scheduled for March 2027 at a congress in Morocco.

At the end of July, UEFA threatened to boycott FIFA-sanctioned tournaments over Infantino’s plans to sell World Cup hosting rights. UEFA subsequently said the FIFA president had lost the trust of many members of the football community.
