NASCAR driver Ryan Blaney admitted he got his ass kicked after confronting rival Carson Hocevar in a pit row brawl at Bristol Motor Speedway.
The on-track conflict erupted during a night race at the Tennessee venue when Hocevar drove down the inside of Blaney. Hocevar caught the left-rear quarter panel of Blaney's vehicle, spinning him out and ending his race prematurely.
Seeking retaliation after the race ended, Blaney marched over to Hocevar on pit row, grabbed his rival aggressively, and began shouting at him. Hocevar responded by throwing two punches that connected with Blaney's head and cheek before bystanders separated the pair. Blaney then managed to break free, ran down Hocevar, and threw a punch before officials separated them for good.
Blaney Comments on Actions Detrimental Podcast
Speaking as a guest on fellow driver Denny Hamlin's podcast Actions Detrimental, Blaney offered a harsh self-assessment of his fighting performance. "I'll be honest, I went over there and I got my ass kicked, for sure," Blaney said during the interview.
"I ate a two piece, and got tagged pretty good. I just wanted to show my displeasure," Blaney explained, admitting he had not planned for the confrontation to turn physical when he approached Hocevar after the checkered flag.
"I didn't have a huge plan. Really, the only plan of mine was, you know, 'I'm going to have a stern conversation with Carson.' I wasn't planning on throwing anything," Blaney said. "I just really wanted to grab him and pretty much yell at him, you know, and show my displeasure. And granted, I kind of grabbed him pretty aggressively, that, you're probably going to defend yourself, you know? And he rightfully did."
Hocevar Reaction and Postseason Chase Standings
Addressing the brawl from his perspective, Hocevar admitted that he understood why his opponent was furious following their collision. "Whether it was his mistake, my mistake, my fault or not, I'd be pretty pissed if I was him," Hocevar said, adding that he would also be mad if he were in Blaney's shoes.
Hocevar explained his decision to throw punches as soon as Blaney grabbed him on pit row. "I saw him coming, and he's moving pretty fast, and then he grabbed me, and I was like, 'OK, I'm not going to wait. I've seen enough of these. I'm going to start swinging and see what happens,'" Hocevar said.
Blaney later expressed regret over the physical altercations, stating that initiating such a fight was really unlike him. He emphasized that he strives to set a positive example for young fans who look up to him.
