Scottie Scheffler produced a stunning nine-under 61 to take a three-shot halfway lead at the FedEx St Jude Championship in Memphis.
The World No 1 moved to 11 under par overall following his second round on Friday, establishing a cushion over South Korea's Sungjae Im and Norway's Viktor Hovland at TPC Southwind.
Scheffler opened his round in sweltering conditions with five consecutive birdies and picked up six birdies across his first seven holes in the Memphis sunshine.
Bogeys at the eighth and 12th holes ended his prospects of posting a sub-60 round, but he responded by making four birdies over his final five holes, including three birdies in a row to close his round.
"You always want to try to get off to a good start," the American said. "I was able to do that today."
"Really just a dream start. Probably one of the best starts I've had on tour, to be honest with you. I couldn't tell you a time where I've been lower early in the round."
"My swing has felt really good in the past couple weeks, especially playing at home. It was nice to get out there and get things rolling early in the round and was able to keep the momentum going and shoot myself a nice round," Scheffler added.
Rory McIlroy struggles at TPC Southwind
Scheffler's fine performance put his playing partner Rory McIlroy in the shade after a difficult day for the Northern Irishman.
McIlroy carded a level-par 70 to leave him tied for 62nd place in the 69-strong field on four under par overall.
Having reached two under for the day heading to the 17th hole, McIlroy dropped back after recording bogey fives on both of his final two holes.
Because the opening event of the FedExCup Playoffs features no cut, McIlroy will play the remaining two rounds over the weekend.
Chasers remain in contention
Jordan Spieth, who was a joint overnight leader, remained in touch at six under par after shooting a Friday 69 at TPC Southwind.
Spieth has not produced a top-10 finish on the PGA Tour this season, but his round keeps him five strokes behind Scheffler going into the weekend.
Tommy Fleetwood is also on six under par after recording a bogey-free 68 during his second round.
"I feel like I played a very patient round of golf," the Englishman said. "It's just nice to be going into the weekend in a good position."
"What can we do about Scottie Scheffler? Just go out there and try to manage your game as best as possible. Shoot the best score you can and see what happens."
"I think in general in the world of golf Scottie is a great person to chase, whether it's a tournament this week or he's the best golfer in the world, and you can all look up to him and try to chase him. He just happens to be up there again and we'll see what we can do over the weekend," Fleetwood added.
FedExCup Playoff format and schedule
The FedEx St Jude Championship, held from August 13 to 16, marks the first event of the PGA Tour's FedExCup Playoffs.
Players accumulated points throughout the season based on their performances in PGA Tour events, with extra points available for signature events and majors.
Only the top 70 players in the standings qualified for the tournament in Memphis, with the top 50 progressing to the BMW Championship from August 20 to 23.
The field will then be trimmed to the top 30 players for the season finale, The Tour Championship, held from August 27 to 30.
Winners of the first two playoff events earn 750 points each, the same amount awarded for major championships and The Players Championship, before points reset to zero ahead of the finale.
Under a format change introduced in 2025, the starting-strokes model based on playoff standings was eliminated, meaning all 30 players at The Tour Championship start at even par.
The winner of The Tour Championship becomes the FedExCup champion for 2026, earning $10m (£7.4m) and a five-year PGA Tour exemption.
Live coverage of the third round of the FedEx St Jude Championship continues at 4pm on Saturday on Sky Sports Golf and Sky Sports Main Event.
