Scottish swimmer Katie Shanahan won a silver medal at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow on July 24, finishing second in the women’s 200-metre backstroke final behind Australia’s Jenna Forrester and ahead of England’s Amalie Smith.
The 22-year-old’s performance came after she turned down an invitation to appear on the reality television show Love Island in 2025. Speaking to BBC Scotland, Shanahan said producers had approached her and English swimmer Abbie Wood about taking part.
Shanahan said she could not go ahead because she was focused on swimming, adding that she had been a little tempted but that swimming had to come first.
The double junior European champion trained at the Tollcross swimming centre in Glasgow ahead of the Games, which run from July 23 to August 2, and the silver is her first medal at the competition.
Shanahan also said she is the biggest Love Island fan in the world and has watched every season, leaving open the possibility of a future move into television.
