A six-year-old boy suffering from an extremely rare skin condition fulfilled his dream on Monday evening after walking onto the pitch alongside SL Benfica winger Rafa Silva at the Estádio da Luz in Lisbon.
Young Salvador, who was born with recessive dystrophic epidermolysis bullosa, received a standing ovation from nearly 63,000 spectators before watching Benfica secure a 2-1 victory over Estoril.
The special appearance took place ahead of the domestic league fixture on August 31, following an initiative organized by the Benfica Foundation in collaboration with the club's professional squad. Salvador emerged from the tunnel holding hands with Rafa Silva, who was the final Lisbon player to enter the field before kickoff.
The young boy spent several minutes on the turf amidst loud cheers from the home supporters before returning to the stands to watch the remainder of the match alongside his family.
Living with recessive dystrophic epidermolysis bullosa
Recessive dystrophic epidermolysis bullosa is a rare genetic connective tissue disorder that causes severe fragility in the skin and internal mucous membranes. Due to defects in collagen production, even slight friction or gentle physical contact can trigger painful blisters and wounds that are difficult to heal. Patients living with the condition often require extensive daily wound care and protective bandages.
Because their skin is as delicate as insect wings, children diagnosed with epidermolysis bullosa are frequently referred to as butterfly children. Medical research into gene therapy and specialized treatments remains ongoing to help manage symptoms and improve the quality of life for individuals affected by the incurable illness.
