Cyclist Pedro Pinto, 25, crashed heavily near the finish of the fifth stage of the Tour of Portugal on Monday, August 10, 2026, and a spectator had to jump the safety barriers to clear his bike from the road.
Pinto, who rides for the Portuguese continental team Efapel Cycling, finished the stage in 105th place, nearly five minutes behind stage winner Julius Johansen of Denmark, who rides for UAE Team Emirates-XRG. Efapel Cycling does not compete at cycling's highest level and was competing on the day through a race invitation. Pinto had no particular ambition for the stage, which took a bad turn when he crashed hard in the final kilometers.
The stage covered 17.4 kilometers and had been shaping up well for Pinto's teammate Tiago Antunes, who finished second. Pinto himself was having a solid run before his crash left him dazed and physically hurt. He was unable to get back up quickly, forcing a spectator to react by climbing over the security barriers to remove his abandoned bike from the middle of the road.
The spectator then helped the injured rider to his feet and supported him to the barriers. The intervention came just in time: moments later, the next competitor came flying through the same corner. Pinto then walked the remaining few meters to the finish line.
A moment of sportsmanship
The episode was held up as another example of cycling's spirit of fair play, one that may have helped avert a serious accident.
