SV Wehen Wiesbaden suffered a 4-0 defeat against newly promoted Würzburg on Friday evening, leaving the club winless at the bottom of 3. Liga.
The result marks a second consecutive defeat for the Hessian side at the start of the new league season, leaving Wiesbaden with zero points and a 1-7 goal difference after two matchdays.
Early chances and first-half collapse
Wiesbaden started the match strongly during the opening ten minutes and created two clear opportunities to take an early lead. However, Fabian Greilinger and Sinan Karweina both failed to capitalize on their chances in front of goal.
Würzburg seized control of the game after former Wiesbaden player Ivan Franjic opened the scoring with a free kick. Head coach Daniel Scherning noted that after the opening goal, Wiesbaden created very little and played far too carelessly.
The home side gained confidence from the opener and doubled their advantage to 2-0 before the halftime break. Wiesbaden tried to respond in the second half but struggled to penetrate Würzburg's penalty area.
Wiesbaden's best chance of the second half fell to midfielder Tarik Gözüsirin in a promising position. Gözüsirin mis-hit his strike, allowing the Würzburg defense to block the shot and launch a dangerous counter-attack on the transition.
Post-match reaction and player criticism
Speaking in the post-match press conference, Scherning criticized his team for playing without sufficient physical commitment. Scherning said the performance lacked tackling ability, physicality, and assertiveness, describing the failure to take early chances as a familiar issue for his squad.
Wiesbaden midfielder Philipp Hercher was equally critical when speaking to broadcaster Magentasport after the final whistle. Hercher said the team had to blame themselves for displaying a lack of aggressiveness and effectiveness, summarizing the overall performance by stating it was nothing at all.
The defeat stood in contrast to Wiesbaden's season opener against Münster, where the club suffered a home loss following a controversial penalty decision. Following Friday's match in Würzburg, players and coaching staff agreed that the home team was the fully deserved winner.
Transfer plans and upcoming cup fixture
Despite the difficult start, Scherning told Magentasport that it was too early after two matches to declare a failed start to the season, though he acknowledged that results were far from what the team had envisioned.
The Wiesbaden head coach also indicated that further squad additions are expected before the transfer window closes. Scherning pointed out that the club has signed only four new players so far and emphasized that management is actively searching for signings who can improve the squad.

Hercher described the high-profile fixture against Leverkusen as an extra game in which Wiesbaden have little to lose, though the club must quickly regain form to collect their first 3. Liga points when league play resumes.
