The GREAT expansion that Wimbledon is going through

The authorities of the neighborhood where the All England Club is located have given the go-ahead to turn the adjacent park into a stadium for 8,000 people and 38 fields.

Merton Town Hall, the neighborhood where the All England Club, Wimbledon’s expansion was approved on Thursday nightwhich aims to change the park adjacent to the club to create a stadium for eight thousand spectators and 38 grass fields.

The next step for the renovation of Wimbledon Park, which used to be a golf course, is to receive the green light from Wandsworth council and the mayor of London.

This proposal was controversial, because the residents of the area came together to protest the environmental degradation that would result, by destroying a green area like the current park. This initiative, called Save Wimbledon Park, gathered more than 13,000 signatures and led 75 people to demonstrate this Thursday at the voting headquarters, receiving six votes in favor and four against.

If the expansion gets the go-ahead from Wandsworth and the mayor, The new fields will not be available until 2030 at the earliest.
