Towson punter Owen Scheihing suffered a horrific broken arm during his team's 45-9 blowout loss to the South Carolina Gamecocks on Saturday night at Williams-Brice Stadium in Columbia.
The injury happened when South Carolina's Vicari Swain broke through coverage on a punt return and sprinted toward the end zone. As Swain neared the goal line, Scheihing threw his body into a last-ditch attempt to bring him down.
Swain leaped directly over the Towson punter, with his knee and leg colliding with Scheihing's helmet as he crossed into the end zone. At the same moment, Swain landed heavily on Scheihing's torso, and the punter's arm buckled and snapped under the impact.
Player carted off the field
Play was halted immediately as medical personnel rushed onto the field to attend to Scheihing, a freshman specialist who was visibly in agony on the turf.
Scheihing had to be placed on a medical cart and driven off the field. In an encouraging sign, he was able to sit upright as he left the stadium.
Coach gives injury update
Towson head coach Pete Shinnick gave a somber update on Scheihing's condition after the game, telling reporters the situation "didn't look good."
Shinnick said Scheihing would undergo further evaluation once the team returned to campus, adding that he would likely need a cast and face an extended period on the sidelines.
Weather delay and game recap
The game was played in torrential downpours and was halted by a 74-minute weather delay early in the third quarter. South Carolina, a Southeastern Conference program, piled up more than 500 yards of offense on the night.
Sellers finished with 119 rushing yards for the Gamecocks, teaming up with running back Matt Fuller, who broke away for a 55-yard touchdown run on his way to 125 yards.
Towson, a Football Championship Subdivision program, pulled within two scores midway through the third quarter when quarterback Andrew Indorf connected with Aaron Enterline on a 23-yard touchdown pass. South Carolina then pulled away to seal a 45-9 victory.
