Trabzonspor announced on Tuesday, August 4, that it has opened negotiations to sign Mohamed Salah, the Egyptian forward who became a free agent after leaving Liverpool this summer.
In a statement filed with Turkey's Public Disclosure Platform, the Turkish club said negotiations had started for the transfer to the team of professional footballer Mohamed Salah, who is a free agent.
Trabzonspor president Ertuğrul Doğan told the television network A Spor that the deal has not yet been finalized. He said Salah is expected to arrive in Istanbul on Wednesday, August 5, for medical examinations before traveling to Trabzon to sign his contract with the Black Sea club. Doğan did not give an exact date for the signing but said it would likely take place on Thursday, August 6.
Salah's nine years at Liverpool
Salah left Liverpool this summer after nine seasons at Anfield. He made 442 appearances for the club, scoring 257 goals, and won two Premier League titles and one UEFA Champions League title.
In the 2024-25 season, Salah scored 29 goals and provided 18 assists in the Premier League, matching the record for goal involvements, goals plus assists, in a single season and setting a new record for a 38-match campaign. That season he was named the Premier League's Player of the Season and won both the Golden Boot and the Playmaker Award, becoming the first player to win all three honors in the same season.
A quieter final season
Salah's output dropped last season. He finished the campaign with seven goals and seven assists in 27 appearances, and was left on the bench for Champions League matches, a decision that led to a public dispute with then-Liverpool manager Arne Slot.
The 34-year-old began his European career in 2012 at Basel before moving to Chelsea. He then had brief spells at Fiorentina and Roma between 2015 and 2017, before joining Liverpool.
Trabzonspor's ambitions
Trabzonspor is traditionally regarded as the fourth-biggest force in Turkish football, behind Fenerbahçe, Galatasaray and Beşiktaş. The club finished third in the Süper Lig last season and will compete in the Europa League playoffs.
Talks with Beşiktaş collapsed
Salah had also come close to joining Beşiktaş. According to Turkish media, those negotiations stalled over the player's financial demands and the rights to his image for commercial use.
