German boxer Viktor Jurk scored one of the fastest knockouts in history, flooring Edwin Castillo with one punch just seconds into their bout on Friday night in Mannheim.
Jurk, unbeaten and carrying significant hype in his homeland, strolled to the centre of the ring moments after the opening bell and unloaded a left hook to the jaw of his Colombian opponent, knocking him out instantly.
The victory shook the boxing world, with many taken aback by the power Jurk showed. Questions have also been raised over whether Castillo was actually intending to touch gloves at the start of the round, which is why his hands were low. He appeared to extend his left glove toward the 26-year-old German southpaw, who took advantage.
Castillo hit the canvas, rolled onto his back, and spread his arms wide before lying motionless as the referee gave the count.
Commentator reaction
The DAZN commentator seemed confused as to why the referee even needed to count, given how out of it Castillo appeared. He said he was not sure why the referee was counting, adding that he had joked the fight could end in 30 seconds and it did not even last that long.
The referee soon waved it off, and Jurk took his undefeated record to 14-0, with 12 of those victories by knockout.
Undercard result
The bout was on the undercard of the IBF welterweight title eliminator between Ireland's Paddy Donovan and Ukraine's Karen Chukhadzhian at the SAP Arena. Donovan took a step toward another shot at the belt by winning a majority decision, with judges scoring it 115-111, 114-112, and 113-113.
