Widzew Łódź have been eliminated from the Polish Cup after losing 1-0 at home to Korona Kielce in Wednesday's first-round tie.
Substitute Daniel Bąk scored the decisive goal in the 73rd minute, heading in a cross from fellow substitute Ciszek after Lingr blocked defender Steve Kapuadi inside the penalty area.
The victory sends Korona Kielce into the second round of Poland's premier cup competition, while Widzew suffer an early exit after a tightly contested fixture in Łódź. Korona goalkeeper Rafał Mamla kept a clean sheet against a persistent Widzew attack, while Ilić started in goal for the host side.
First half opportunities
Widzew entered the match seeking revenge for an August Ekstraklasa fixture, where Korona secured a 2-1 win on Widzew's home ground behind two goals from Morgan Fassbender. Fassbender started again for Kielce on Wednesday and came close to opening the scoring in the first half, but his close-range effort was blocked by Kapuadi.
Widzew created several clear chances before the interval at the opposite end of the pitch. Both Sebastian Bergier and Stipe Biuk struck the post behind Mamla, and Bergier put the ball into the net only to see his effort ruled out for offside as the sides went into half-time at 0-0.
Second half breakthrough
Korona broke the deadlock in the 73rd minute following a move created entirely by three substitutes. After Bąk put the visiting side ahead, Widzew pushed forward in search of an equaliser. Bergier hit the post for a second time late in the match, but Mamla held firm to protect Korona's single-goal lead.
Both clubs view the domestic cup as the shortest pathway into European competition. Korona Kielce sports director Paweł Golański told Sport.pl that European qualification was an explicit target backed by club investment. He said playing in European tournaments within one or two seasons was the goal, while achieving progress and securing a finish in the upper half of the Ekstraklasa table remained important for the current campaign.
European ambitions and cup history
Widzew Łódź also harbour European ambitions under owner Robert Dobrzycki, who has provided solid financial backing to build team strength. The defeat means Widzew will not match their performance from last season, when they reached the Polish Cup quarter-finals before losing on penalties to GKS Katowice.
Korona Kielce are looking to improve on their previous cup campaign, which ended a round earlier than Widzew's. Kielce saw their hopes of playing in the cup final at the National Stadium in Warsaw end in the round of 16, where they lost on penalties to Chojniczanka Chojnice.
The encounter in Łódź was the only first-round fixture contested between two top-flight Ekstraklasa clubs. The remaining first-round matches in the Polish Cup are scheduled for 3 September and 15 September, when reserve team Widzew II Łódź take on Polonia Bytom.
