Chelsea have officially confirmed Xabi Alonso as their new manager, appointing him on a four-year contract that begins on July 1, 2026.
The 44-year-old former Real Madrid and Bayer Leverkusen coach becomes the first Chelsea boss since Jose Mourinho in 2013 to be announced in the role of manager rather than head coach, a title that suggests greater influence with the club's hierarchy than predecessors such as Enzo Maresca and Liam Rosenior.
Chelsea, currently managed on an interim basis by Calum McFarlane, lost 1-0 to Pep Guardiola's Manchester City in the FA Cup final on Saturday after a winner from Antoine Semenyo.
Alonso was installed as Chelsea's leading candidate last week, ahead of Andoni Iraola, Marco Silva, Oliver Glasner, Filipe Luis and Cesc Fabregas, with Chelsea's players reported to be personally excited by the prospect of his arrival.
"Chelsea Football Club is delighted to announce the appointment of Xabi Alonso as Manager of the Men's Team," the club wrote on X on Sunday. "The Spaniard will begin his role on July 1, 2026, having agreed a four-year contract at Stamford Bridge. Welcome to Chelsea, Xabi."
Alonso's managerial path
Alonso's last managerial spell ended when Real Madrid sacked him in January. He had joined the Spanish giants after guiding Leverkusen to the Bundesliga title in 2023-24 while also finishing as Europa League runner-up with the club.
He had also been linked with Liverpool, the club where he made his name as a player, but that job is not currently vacant, with Anfield officials adamant they retain faith in Arne Slot heading into the summer.
Chelsea accelerated talks over the past week to secure Alonso's signature, promising him a meaningful say in transfer business, one of the assurances he sought during negotiations.
Chelsea's run-in
McFarlane will remain interim head coach until the end of the season. Following the FA Cup final defeat, Chelsea have two games left to secure qualification for either the Europa League or Conference League, sitting ninth in the Premier League behind Brighton and Brentford.
Brighton and Brentford sit four and two points above Chelsea respectively, occupying the final Europa League spot and the sole Conference League place. Chelsea face Tottenham Hotspur on Tuesday before a final-day trip to Sunderland's Stadium of Light, with Alonso, who has been in London for in-person talks, potentially attending one or both matches.
