Arsenal have completed the signing of England defender Ezri Konsa from Aston Villa for an initial £51 million fee. The 28-year-old center-back has signed a four-year contract at the Emirates Stadium, with the club holding an option to extend the agreement by a further year.

The transfer was finalised on Thursday following a successful medical, completing a package that could reach £55 million after £4 million in potential add-ons. The announcement comes just hours before the reigning Premier League champions open their title defence against newly-promoted Coventry City in North London.

The transfer fee represents a major valuation victory for Aston Villa. Arsenal initially valued the defender at £30 million, but Villa held out for a higher price as Konsa entered the final two years of his contract at Villa Park in Birmingham.

Konsa was absent from Unai Emery's squad for Villa's UEFA Super Cup defeat against Paris Saint-Germain last week while away on holiday following the World Cup. The Super Cup is the annual match contested between the winners of the Champions League and the Europa League.

Key role in Villa success

The defender was a cornerstone of Emery's side last season, featuring 48 times across all competitions while scoring two goals and providing one assist. Konsa also served as Villa's vice-captain, regularly wearing the armband when club captain John McGinn was absent.

His contributions helped Villa lift the UEFA Europa League trophy and finish fourth in the Premier League, securing qualification for the 2026-27 UEFA Champions League campaign.

World Cup starter for England

At international level, Konsa played in every game of England's World Cup run as the team finished third. England manager Thomas Tuchel selected him to start seven of the team's eight matches at the tournament, partnering him with Marc Guehi at the heart of the defence.

Konsa also demonstrated his versatility during the tournament by filling in at right-back during England's quarter-final victory over Norway.
