The Asian Boxing Confederation (ASBC) has decided to remain under the auspices of the International Boxing Association (IBA) rather than move to World Boxing, according to the organization’s website.
This decision was taken during the ASBC extraordinary congress in Bangkok. 31 countries voted to remain under the auspices of the IBA, 3 to move to World Boxing and 1 other abstained.
“At the last meeting, important issues were resolved and, following the votes of affiliated organizations, the Asian Boxing Confederation remains a member of the IBA until the International Olympic Committee (IOC) recognizes world boxing” , indicates the ASBC press release.
In June, the IOC Executive Committee recommended to the organization’s session that it withdraw recognition of the IBA because the association had not fulfilled the conditions necessary for its reinstatement proposed by the IOC. The decision was approved by majority on Thursday. Previously, an alternative organization to the IBA, World Boxing, was created, which some countries have already joined.
Since the end of 2020, the IBA has been headed by a Russian Umar Kremlev .
