Dubois and Joshua to fight for title
Egis Klimasmanager of the WBO/WBA/IBO/WBC heavyweight champion Alexandra Usikacommented on the Ukrainian’s refusal to renounce the IBF title.
Klimas said that Alexander single-handedly made the decision to make the title vacant. Egis also denied the statement of journalist Dan Rafael that this clause was signed in the contract for Usik’s fight with Tyson Fury.
“It is not true. We did not have such a clause in the contract. Usik did it because he wanted to.”
Usyk made an appeal in which he stated that he was giving the belt to the winner of the British derby between his two former opponents in the ring – Daniel Dubois and Anthony Joshua. Thus, Usik will lose his status as the absolute heavyweight world champion, although he will remain the linear IBF champion.
The head of the promotion company Queensberry Promotions, Frank Warren, reported that the Dubois and Joshua teams are negotiating a fight. The British Derby is scheduled for September 21st. The arena for the event will be Wembley Stadium.
Dubois finished the fight with Filip Hrgovic in the eighth round. The fight took place as part of the “5 on 5” event in Riyadh. The British heavyweight won the IBF interim title.
Joshua defeated former UFC world champion Francis Ngannou in his last fight. After the fight, Eddie Hearn named Anthony the No. 1 heavyweight boxer in the world. Joshua himself spoke about his desire to fight the next fight in June, but he was offered to postpone the fight to September.
On the night of May 19, Usik inflicted the first defeat of Fury in his professional career in a fight that took place at the Kingdom Arena in Riyadh (Saudi Arabia). The victory was awarded to the Ukrainian by a split decision: 115-112, 113-114 and 114-113.
Usik became the first absolute world heavyweight champion in the era of four belts. In the heavyweight division, the last time Lennox Lewis held absolute status was in 1999, but then three titles were enough for this title.
It was reported that an agreement had been reached between Usyk and Fury for a re-fight. The “Gypsy King” has officially activated the rematch option. The second fight between Usik and Fury will take place on December 21, 2024 in Riyadh (Saudi Arabia).
