South Africa's Casandra Alexander secured a wire to wire victory at the KPMG Women's Irish Open at The K Club, finishing 20 under par to claim her second Ladies European Tour title.
Alexander finished three shots clear of runner-up Sara Kouskova of Czechia, with Finland's Noora Komulainen finishing a further stroke back in third. Ireland's Leona Maguire finished five shots off the pace in fourth place at 15 under par.
The victory was Alexander's second on the Ladies European Tour, following five runner-up finishes earlier this season. She established control of the tournament on day one on the Palmer South Course at Straffan, County Kildare, with a course-record round of 63.
Final round performance and victory
Alexander birdied three of her first four holes during her opening round and maintained her lead throughout the rain-affected tournament. On the final day, she briefly showed vulnerability by dropping shots on each of her opening two holes.
However, Alexander quickly recovered with three consecutive birdies from the fifth hole to rebuild her margin at the top of the leaderboard. She controlled the remainder of the round to seal the victory.
"This one is really special," Alexander said. "One, it's a special event, and two, I almost feel like the second one is as important as the first one because it's not a fluke!"
"I can't wait to get home and celebrate with friends and family," Alexander added. "The Order of Merit is goal No 1, and the best way to win the Order of Merit is to win golf tournaments."
Weather disruptions and course adjustments
The tournament experienced severe weather conditions throughout the week in County Kildare. Rain swept across the Palmer South Course on Saturday, forcing play in the third round to be suspended for 45 minutes.
Continued heavy rainfall prompted organizers to shorten the closing par-five hole for Sunday's final round as players battled sodden fairways.
Leona Maguire leads record home contingent
Maguire led a historic home showing at the tournament, which featured 16 Irish players comprising nine professionals and seven amateurs. The group represented the strongest home contingent in the history of the KPMG Women's Irish Open.
The 31-year-old Cavan golfer started Sunday's final round seven shots behind after shooting a bogey-free 63 on Saturday, which included nine birdies before heavy rain arrived. On Sunday, she mounted a surge with four birdies in five holes around the turn to reach 15 under par.
Maguire then recorded six consecutive pars before dropping a shot at the short 17th hole. She closed her round with a birdie at the shortened par-five last to equal her career-best finish in her national open, matching her fourth-place result at Dromoland Castle in 2022.
"It's been a great week," Maguire said. "The crowds have been fantastic, rain, hail or shine. I think it's another very successful Irish Open in the books and the fans really made it this week."
"Nice to get a couple of low ones over the weekend," Maguire added. "Friday was the one that got away but overall, 15 under par is a very solid week's effort and nice to be able to give the home fans something to cheer about."
Solheim Cup preparations and European team selection
Maguire's strong finish comes immediately before the upcoming Solheim Cup, the biennial match play competition between Europe and the United States. Captain Anna Nordqvist selected Maguire as one of her captain's picks despite Maguire missing the cut in four of the year's five major championships and going two years without a tournament victory.
Maguire holds an 8-3-1 record across three Solheim Cup appearances and was the top-scoring player as an unbeaten rookie during Europe's 2021 victory. She is the only experienced player among Nordqvist's four wildcards, alongside debutants Julia Lopez Ramirez of Spain, Nastasia Nadaud of France, and Mimi Rhodes of England.
Upcoming Solheim Cup schedule and television coverage
Both the LPGA Tour and Ladies European Tour will take a week off before the 20th edition of the Solheim Cup at Bernardus Golf in the Netherlands, where Team Europe will attempt to regain the trophy from Team USA.
Live coverage of the opening ceremony begins on Thursday September 10 at 4pm on Sky Sports+. Round-the-clock tournament coverage follows on Sky Sports Golf, starting at 6am on Friday September 11 and Saturday September 12 with two play sessions each day, before concluding with the singles matches from 9am on Sunday September 13.
