Chelsea have taken the decision to rebrand their Under-21 and Under-19 youth sides under the new title of Cobham Next Gen for the upcoming season. From the start of the new campaign, both teams will compete under the moniker in Premier League 2 and the UEFA Under-19 Youth League.

The Blues decided to scrap age-group titles for their top two developmental teams because the squad that finished top of Premier League 2 last term had an age profile resembling an Under-18 squad. Domestic competition for elite English academies is restricted to Under-18 and Under-21 levels, while European continental fixtures are staged at Under-19 level.

Chelsea mainly used the same group of players across both developmental competitions last season, with several players as young as 16 featuring regularly. The club noted that the majority of their top prospects are dispatched on loan for first-team experience by the age of 20.

Chelsea’s academy is one of the most profitable in world football, with Trevoh Chalobah’s £25m move to Como last week taking the club’s academy player sales to more than £305m since 2022

Club statement on rebranding

Chelsea revealed the refresh in an official statement published on their website, explaining that the name change emphasizes the academy's aim of developing players for the first team. "The new name more accurately reflects the age profile of our leading Academy side and Chelsea's long-standing heritage of developing the next generation of players for the senior game," the club stated.

"While the squad competed in Premier League 2 as an Under-21s side, its average age last season was closer to that of an Under-18s group, with several players as young as 16 years old featuring regularly," the statement added.

"Cobham Next Gen also better fits the role of the squad within the Academy," the statement continued. "It recognises a group of young players with momentum, taking the next step in their development, the final one in the pathway to senior football, competing at a higher level as they continue their journey through Cobham towards the men's team."

"Providing young players with opportunities to compete above their natural age group remains a key part of the club's approach to player development," Chelsea stated. "That was reflected last season as one of the youngest squads in the Premier League 2 finished at the top of the table."

"The introduction of Cobham Next Gen also strengthens the Academy's identity," the statement noted. "More than an age-group name, it represents the players progressing through Cobham and the opportunities available to them as they continue their development towards the men's game. This new identity reflects the distinction of Chelsea's Academy as a unique footballing environment with its own history, culture and proven record of developing players for the highest level of the game."

Surrey base and international precedents

Chelsea's training base is located in Cobham, Surrey. The Premier League club is not the first major team to adopt the moniker for a primary developmental squad, as Italian giants Juventus use the same Next Gen tag for their Serie C outfit.

Premier League 2 serves as the primary domestic league competition for top-tier academy sides in England. Meanwhile, continental academy football is played at Under-19 level in the UEFA Youth League, where European clubs field their top prospects.

Academy finances and loan departures

The academy setup at Cobham ranks among the most profitable in world football. Defender Trevoh Chalobah completed a £25 million move to Italian club Como last week, taking the club's academy player sales to more than £305 million since BlueCo took over Chelsea in 2022.

Pathway progression was highlighted last season when academy prospects Jesse Derry and Ryan Kavuma-McQueen both made their first-team debuts for the Blues. Both players have secured loan moves for the current season, with Derry joining Portuguese club Sporting Lisbon and Kavuma-McQueen heading to Portsmouth.
