With the margin suddenly narrow, Palmer provided much-needed daylight with a fabulous finish for Chelsea's fourth goal. The strike sent Alonso leaping out of his technical area, pumping his fists toward the home supporters.
The decisive finish unfolded in front of two interested spectators in the Stamford Bridge stands. England manager Thomas Tuchel and Brazil boss Carlo Ancelotti may have been reflecting on their respective summer regrets after choosing to leave Palmer and Joao Pedro at home for the World Cup.
Brighton kept fighting, and Gross headed in a stoppage-time goal, but it served only as a consolation for the visitors.
