Fenerbahce 1-1 Lyon: Greenwood cancels out Openda opener

Olympique Lyonnais held Fenerbahce to a 1-1 draw in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League play-off tie at the Sukru Saracooglu Stadium in Istanbul on Tuesday.

Belgian striker Lois Openda put the French side ahead with a first half header before Mason Greenwood equalised early in the second half to leave the tie finely balanced ahead of next week's return match.

The result gives manager Paulo Fonseca's team a solid platform as they head back to France, though Fenerbahce finished strongly in a hostile atmosphere and struck the post late on.

Openda heads Lyon into first half lead

Before kickoff, Lyon midfielder Corentin Tolisso warned that Fenerbahce possessed the quality of a true Champions League opponent following their summer squad updates, anticipating a difficult night in Turkey.

The match got under way at 20:45 amid deafening noise from the home crowd, but Lyon demonstrated composure and defensive discipline throughout the opening exchanges despite struggling to create regular attacking chances.

Lyon broke the deadlock in the 40th minute through a well-crafted team move. Tolisso initially attempted to find Openda, and although Fenerbahce cleared the initial threat, Lyon recycled the ball to Tanner Tessmann on the right side of the penalty area. Tolisso overlapped and delivered a precise cross into the box for Openda, who directed a header into the net.

The visitors preserved their 1-0 advantage until the interval, having successfully muted Fenerbahce's attacking threat during a controlled first half performance.

Greenwood strikes back after restart

Fenerbahce responded immediately after the restart, finding an equaliser in the 47th minute. N'Golo Kante recovered possession in midfield and passed to Kerem Akturkoglu, who set up Greenwood on the right.

Greenwood drove at Lyon defender Abner, cut inside onto his left foot, and struck a powerful curling effort that goalkeeper Dominik Greif could only touch as it flew into the net.

Greenwood, who faces domestic violence allegations made by his current girlfriend, had endured a frustrating performance up to that point, but his moment of individual quality brought the Turkish hosts back level.

Fenerbahce began pressing for a second goal, and in the 63rd minute left back Archie Brown surged down the flank past Lyon winger Ernest Nuamah to deliver a dangerous cross. Striker Vedat Muriqi connected with a header, but Greif reacted well to make the save.

Late pressure and woodwork rescue Lyon

As the second half progressed, Lyon found it difficult to project forward in attack, mirroring their early struggles in the match. Brown continued to cause problems down the left, picking out Akturkoglu in the 72nd minute, though the header from the winger, who was the only Turkish player in Fenerbahce's starting lineup, lacked power.

Fenerbahce made changes in the 73rd minute, bringing on former Paris Saint-Germain attacker Marco Asensio and Dorgeles Nene in place of Anderson Talisca and Akturkoglu. Two minutes later, Fonseca made his first adjustments for Lyon, introducing Salim Boudache and Clinton Mata to replace a disappointing Nuamah and Justin Kluivert.

Lyon winger Malick Fofana attempted to spark attacks down the flank, but his crosses repeatedly failed to find teammates in the box. Lyon appeared increasingly content to protect the draw, a risky approach that nearly backfired in the 81st minute when Nene cut inside from the left and unleashed a long-range strike that crashed off Greif's post with the keeper beaten.

Tempers flared in the closing minutes as refereeing decisions mounted. Kante received a yellow card in the 82nd minute for wrestling Boudache to the ground, before Fenerbahce substituted the ineffective Muriqi for Romelu Lukaku in the 83rd minute. Fenerbahce defender Milan Skriniar was subsequently booked in the 84th minute following a series of fouls.

Fonseca introduced Danish midfielder Mads Bidstrup in the 86th minute for his Lyon debut, replacing Tyler Morton. Lyon created one final chance in the 88th minute when Tolisso struck a powerful effort from distance, forcing Fenerbahce goalkeeper Ederson into a difficult save before four minutes of stoppage time elapsed to seal the 1-1 draw.

All to play for in return leg

Speaking to Canal+ after the final whistle, Openda described the result as positive while noting that Lyon could have scored a second goal. He praised the squad's fearlessness in a challenging environment and expressed satisfaction with his goal, adding that he still expects more from his own performance.

Openda stressed that the tie remains balanced at 50-50 given Fenerbahce's high quality, but emphasised that Lyon's home supporters would provide a major boost in the deciding fixture.

The UEFA Champions League play-off round represents the final qualifying barrier before the competition's main league phase. Both clubs are competing for a lucrative spot among Europe's elite, with Fenerbahce seeking a return to the group stage and Lyon aiming to re-establish their standing on the continental stage.

The decisive second leg will take place next Wednesday at 21:00 local time at the Groupama Stadium in Lyon, where the winner will progress to the Champions League league phase.
