Fenerbahce and Viking FK secured their places in the UEFA Champions League League Phase on Wednesday night after earning decisive second-leg victories in their play-off ties.
Turkish side Fenerbahce won 2-1 away against Lyon to seal a 3-2 aggregate victory, while Norwegian outfit Viking defeated Dinamo Zagreb 3-1 in Stavanger to complete a historic 5-3 aggregate triumph.
Both teams advanced directly to the main stage without needing extra time, joining Greek club AEK, who had also previously secured their qualification.
Fenerbahce victory in France
Fenerbahce traveled to France knowing a win was required following a 1-1 draw in the first leg in Istanbul. The visitors established an early advantage when Kosovan striker Vedat Muriqi opened the scoring in the 24th minute.
English defender Archie Brown doubled the lead for the Turkish club just four minutes later, putting Fenerbahce in firm control of the tie before half-time.
Lyon attempted to mount a comeback in the second half, with Belgian winger Malick Fofana scoring in the 61st minute to reduce the deficit to 2-1. However, the French side could not find a second goal to force extra time, allowing Fenerbahce to preserve their lead until the final whistle.
Fenerbahce, based in Istanbul, are among Turkey's most decorated clubs and regular participants in European competition. Their victory at Lyon's home ground ensures their entry into the newly introduced 36-team Champions League League Phase, which replaces the traditional group stage format.
Historic qualification for Viking
In Stavanger, Dinamo Zagreb struck first when Arber Hoxha found the net in the 10th minute, putting the Croatian team ahead after the two sides had drawn 2-2 in the first leg in Croatia.
Viking responded quickly as Zlatko Tripic converted an 18th-minute penalty to bring the Norwegian hosts level. The home team then completed a remarkable turnaround early in the second half with two goals in rapid succession.
Edvin Austbø put Viking ahead in the 48th minute, and Sondre Moy scored two minutes later to extend the lead to 3-1 on the night. Dinamo Zagreb were unable to respond, sparking celebrations as Viking secured a 5-3 victory on aggregate.
The result marks the first time Viking, who compete in Norway's top-flight Eliteserien, have qualified for the main stage of Europe's top club tournament. Dinamo Zagreb, frequent Croatian representatives in European competition, could not break down Viking's defense in the closing stages.
Extra time required in Bratislava
In Wednesday's other fixture, Slovenian side Celje and Slovakian champions Slovan Bratislava remained deadlocked after 90 minutes. The 1-1 scoreline in the second leg matched the result from their opening encounter, sending the tie beyond regulation time to decide who advances.
