President of the Volleyball Federation of Ukraine Vladimir Melnik said that Ukraine will not accept male european volleyball championship in 2023. However, the European Volleyball Confederation will provide the national team with a ticket to the finals of Euro 2023.
“The fact that we were deprived of the status of the hosts of the European Championship is understandable, because this is the final part, and we still have a war going on. Even if we imagine that it ends tomorrow, we are unlikely to be ready to accept, because not everyone wants to come to us. The state will have no time for halls, I think so. And what we got in return is participation in the final part of Euro 2023.”
“We did not participate in the qualification, but it has already ended. I don’t know how it will be, because they (EKV) hinted at it to me even earlier. But they assured us not to worry, because they would give a place in the final part. They will probably give you a wild card. Because without the selection, we should not be there, because at the last Euro we were 13th, and only the top 8 passes automatically.
“The leadership of the CEV offered us an exchange for hosting the Euro 2025 tournament. I just arrived yesterday from the General Congress, where I met with the leadership and in particular the President of the CEV. He confirmed this offer for the European Championship in 2025.”
“But I asked not to rush, because I cannot guarantee the organization of these competitions yet. We do not have a single hall that would be suitable for the European Championship. We had problems in peacetime with how to take it. That is, we were given the opportunity to take on the role of the hosts of Euro 2025, unless we ourselves will not be able to host it.”
Earlier it was reported that the Ukrainian men’s volleyball team will perform in the qualifying tournament for the 2024 Olympic Games. Ukraine was among the 24 teams that will be divided into three groups of 8 teams in the qualification. Two teams from each group will advance to the Olympics.
The Ukrainian men’s volleyball team takes 16th place in the ranking of the International Volleyball Federation (FIVB). This is the best result in the history of our team.
Recall that at the 2022 World Cup, the Ukrainian team reached the quarterfinals for the first time.
The European Championship will be held in August-September 2023. The tournament will be held in four countries – Italy, North Macedonia, Bulgaria and Israel.
