Paris Saint-Germain moved to the top of the Ligue 1 table after securing a 2-0 victory over Olympique Lyonnais on Sunday.
Second-half strikes from Senny Mayulu and substitute Mika Godts broke Lyon's resistance after the visitors had held firm for more than an hour under pleasant conditions at the Parc des Princes.
The victory lifts Luis Enrique's side into first place after eight rounds of the domestic season, ending an early-season spell where rival clubs had managed to keep pace at the summit.
Goalkeeping duel in open first half
Lyon entered the match without several regular starters, missing attackers Pavel Sulc, Keito Nakamura and Lois Openda following extensive squad rotation during their midweek Europa League fixture. Despite those absences, Paulo Fonseca's team remained compact and disciplined, pressing effectively to deny Paris Saint-Germain space in the final third.
The opening period developed into an engaging contest defined by sharp individual duels and outstanding goalkeeping at both ends. Dominik Greif in the Lyon goal and Matvei Safonov for Paris Saint-Germain each produced decisive saves to keep the match scoreless.
Safonov prevented Lyon from taking the lead with the save of the match, reacting instinctively to claw away a looping, reversed header from Moussa Niakhate that seemed destined for the Parisian net. The French commentary noted humorously that the defender's header looked bound for Fourviere, the landmark hill overlooking the city of Lyon.
Greif proved equally dependable at the opposite end. The tall Slovakian international goalkeeper stretched his full frame to smother a low effort from Ferran Torres after the Spanish attacker had found space behind the defence.
Chances and defensive duels before the break
Torres had threatened earlier when Portuguese playmaker Vitinha pierced the Lyon defensive structure with a crisp through ball. Morocco international Achraf Hakimi darted forward to pull the ball back into the penalty area, where Torres attempted to connect before Lyon midfielder Tanner Tessmann scrambled the ball away.
Desire Doue also showed quick footwork to beat his defender inside the area, but the winger dragged his subsequent effort well wide of the target. Paris Saint-Germain went close again when an acrobatic bicycle kick flew over Greif's crossbar, evoking memories of previous spectacular strikes at the Stadium de Toulouse.
Lyon remained competitive thanks to an intense physical battle on the right flank of their defence. Their right-sided defender, on loan from Italian club AC Milan, won repeated individual duels to keep the home side's wingers in check.
Mayulu breaks the deadlock
Paris Saint-Germain asserted control after the interval as Lyon began to fatigue from their midweek European commitments. The visitors dropped deeper into their own half, struggling to retain possession or launch counter-attacks against relentless Parisian pressure.
The breakthrough arrived shortly after the hour mark. With Lyon pinned back on the edge of their box, Tessmann hesitated to close down the shooting lane, allowing Mayulu to step into space and strike.
The young midfielder drove a powerful shot inside the near post to beat Greif and put Paris Saint-Germain 1-0 ahead. The fierce strike mirrored the shooting power typically seen from Doue and rewarded the home side for their sustained attacking momentum.
Luis Enrique had already made tactical adjustments by sending on Belgian winger Godts in place of Portuguese midfielder Joao Neves. The Spanish manager adjusted his attack while managing a bench that lacked injured forwards Ousmane Dembele and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, though defender Lucas Hernandez was available following his recent outing against Barcelona.
Godts seals victory after midfield error
Fonseca reacted to the opening goal by calling on his substitutes, introducing Boudache and Nartey to inject fresh energy into the Lyon midfield. However, recent history offered little hope of a comeback for the visiting supporters.
Lyon possess a dismal away record when conceding first under Fonseca, having lost 14 of their previous 15 away matches across Ligue 1 and the Europa League after falling behind.
That weakness proved costly once again when Boudache was caught in possession in central midfield. Paris Saint-Germain pounced immediately on the loose ball, sending Godts racing clear through the middle of the pitch.
The young Belgian cut inside onto his stronger foot and placed a precise finish past Greif, with the ball striking the inside of the post on its way into the net to make it 2-0.
Lyon had a late chance to pull a goal back when they worked the ball into the Parisian penalty area, but hesitation in the box allowed Ukrainian defender Illia Zabarnyi to step in and extinguish the threat. Paris Saint-Germain then kept possession comfortably until the final whistle, sealing first place before attention turned to the Ballon d'Or ceremony later in the evening.
