Safnauer: We should be closer to third in 2023

Alpine team principal Otmar Szafnauer believes the stability of Esteban Okon and Fernando Alonso enabled the team to finish fourth in the Constructors’ Championship, but another reason is Daniel Ricciardo’s poor performance at McLaren…

Otmar Szafnauer: “If you just look at the results of the season and Norris’ double points, they will be higher than us. It doesn’t happen in life, but it’s important for the team to have two really competitive riders who can deliver results every weekend.

This is especially important in the battle of the teams of the middle group, which do not get that many points anyway. But if one finishes 12th and the other finishes eighth, instead of seventh and eighth or eighth and ninth, over time this difference starts to matter.

Next year we need to take the next step towards a potential title challenge. We expect that hundreds of Grand Prix will be enough for this. Twenty is already behind, eighty are left. This year we are fourth, but on the borderline with fifth place, which means that the step has to be serious so that we can get closer to third place next year.

In 2023 we need to get closer to third than fifth, even staying fourth will be proof of our progress.”
