According to information reported by journalist Julio Peña, organizers are working toward a tentative opening date of October 18, 2026. However, the exact kickoff date has not yet been officially confirmed by the Peruvian Volleyball Federation.
The schedule adjustment stems from unresolved tournament regulations for the upcoming campaign. The Peruvian Volleyball Federation, known locally as the FPV, has called participating clubs to an official meeting to resolve points that continue to cause disagreement.
Key issues under evaluation include the registration criteria and participation rules for foreign players. Official match schedules for the season cannot be finalized until member clubs and federation officials reach a consensus on these conditions.
The Peruvian Volleyball League serves as the top tier of women's professional volleyball in Peru, showcasing elite national talent alongside international signees. The governing federation, headquartered in the capital city of Lima, oversees national league structures and prepares Peru's national squads for international tournaments.
Disagreements Over League Regulations
The uncertainty surrounding the official start date has impacted clubs across the country as they finalize their playing squads. Teams have already begun pre-season training camps and are currently competing in preparatory matches ahead of the new season.
The delay may provide additional preparation time for certain teams, including Universitario de Deportes. Universitario has several key players currently away on national team duty with the Peruvian national squad for international fixtures, and the calendar shift allows the club more time to train with its full roster before competitive league play begins.
Universitario de Deportes, based in Lima, is one of the oldest and most widely supported sporting institutions in Peru, fielding teams across multiple professional sports. In the previous league campaign, rival club Alianza Lima claimed the championship title, marking their third consecutive national volleyball crown.
Scheduling Adjustments for the 2026-27 Season
If the league officially commences around October 18, organizers will be forced to adjust the competition calendar to ensure all tournament stages are completed on schedule. Adjustments may include scheduling midweek matchdays, particularly as major sporting events scheduled for 2027 will occupy significant portions of the sports calendar.
Managing tight fixture schedules is a common challenge for national sports federations balancing domestic leagues with international calendar commitments. Incorporating midweek rounds allows leagues to preserve full tournament formats without extending season end dates into conflicting international competition windows.
Expanded Field of Eleven Teams
Another major change for the 2026-27 season is the expansion of the league to 11 participating teams. Because the competition features an odd number of participants, one club will be scheduled for a bye during each round of fixtures.
Federation officials have yet to announce whether the tournament will retain the exact match format utilized during the previous season. The 10 clubs currently included in league planning are Alianza Lima, Club Atletico Atenea, Circolo Sportivo Italiano, Deportivo Geminis, Deportivo Soan, Olva Latino, Rebaza Acosta, Regatas Lima, Universidad San Martin de Porres, and Universitario de Deportes.
Traditional powerhouses such as Regatas Lima and Circolo Sportivo Italiano have long histories in Peruvian volleyball, while Universidad San Martin de Porres has established itself as a regular title contender over the past decade. Together with popular multi-sport clubs Alianza Lima and Universitario, they form the core of Peru's top-division volleyball circuit.
For now, October 18 remains a tentative reference date for the start of the competition. The Peruvian Volleyball Federation is expected to issue an official announcement confirming the finalized start date once tournament regulations are approved.
