Alonso: All settings must be optimized for qualifying

Aston Martin F1 training at Suzuka was limited due to adverse weather conditions, but all teams were on an equal footing. Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll managed to complete a certain number of laps in the first session.

The team has prepared a number of technical innovations for the Japanese phase of the championship, including a modernized underbody, body panels and an additional rear wing on the AMR24. On Friday it was important to see what influence all this had on the operation of the car.

Fernando Alonso (7th in the first session): “It’s great to drive on a track like Suzuka, but there’s not much to add today because we didn’t go out on track in the second practice due to the bad weather. I feel sorry for the fans who gathered at the track to support us. They always create a great atmosphere – let’s hope we can please them with an interesting show tomorrow and Sunday.

The first training went well, but so far this doesn’t say much. We need to optimize all the settings for tomorrow and qualifying, then try to fully utilize the car’s potential on Sunday.”

Lance walk (15th in the first session): “We have prepared technical innovations for this weekend and when we test them on the track it is always good. In the morning session we mainly worked on the track in a car equipped with aerodynamic sensors. Further events were delayed by rain, so we didn’t complete many laps today.

Tomorrow we will have to focus on preparing for the qualifications, and we already have ideas in which direction to go, but we will see…’
