Marco: Max and Lando were flying too hard

Red Bull motorsport advisor Helmut Marko commented on the collision between Max Verstappen and Lando Norris on lap 64 of the Austrian Grand Prix.

Helmut Marko: “We missed the win due to various factors. Firstly, the pit stop was bad, allowing Lando to approach the DRS zone behind Max.

We expected Hard tyres to be the best choice, but in reality it turned out differently. The temperature was lower than expected. This meant that Lando had new tyres in the last stint and we had run-in tyres. In addition, Max locked his wheels in turn four after the pit stop. All this complicated our situation.

I think they both piloted too intensely in that episode. Maybe we should have intervened because we knew Lando was under investigation for trespassing. But we didn’t know if he would get a fine.

Looking back, we realise that we could have said to Max: ‘Okay, let him through.’ But let’s evaluate the results of the race positively: we increased the lead in the individual championship and in the constructors’ championship.”
