The opposite view is shared by another former Formula 1 driver Pedro de la Rosa. The Spaniard believes Alonso made the right decision and will be able to win at the wheel of a Silverstone team car.
“Fernando remains committed to his El Plan, the essence of which is to start winning again,” Pedro de la Rosa told Spanish radio station Cadena SER. “Fernando didn’t say that, but he changed his plan because he thinks the transition is the best option. I like the decision he made and I think he took a step in the right direction. People just don’t understand where Aston Martin stands for.
I won’t hide that the decision surprised everyone. It’s amazing how Fernando and Aston Martin managed to keep everything a secret during the round in Hungary – they did a great job.
The fact is that the team receives large investments and is growing rapidly as a result. They needed a Fernando level racer to motivate employees.
When you sign with Alonso, you say you won’t stay in the middle. Sooner or later the project will win. After all, it is ambition and investment that drive a rider to make such a decision.
Many were surprised by Fernando’s choice – they say he took a step back. I agree they are one of the worst teams right now but they are getting investments. If I had been in Alonso’s shoes, I would have done the same.”
