Greece will field a record delegation of 60 athletes at the European Athletics Championships starting Monday, August 10, in Birmingham, England. The squad of 33 men and 27 women is the largest Greece has ever sent to the competition, surpassing its previous record of 50 set in Rome.
The Athens-Macedonian News Agency reported that events will take place at Alexander Stadium, the largest athletics venue in the United Kingdom. The stadium has a permanent capacity of 18,000 spectators, which can expand to 40,000 for major tournaments, as it did for the 2022 Commonwealth Games.
This marks the first time a British city hosts the outdoor European Athletics Championships. Birmingham previously hosted the 2007 European Indoor Championships, along with the World Indoor Championships in 2003 and 2018. A total of 1,645 athletes, comprising 840 men and 805 women from 49 countries, will compete at the event.
Greek Medal Hopes and Experienced Athletes
Long jumper Miltos Tentoglou leads Greece's medal hopes as he seeks his fourth consecutive European title. Pole vaulter Emmanouil Karalis also arrives as a top contender after earning silver in Rome two years ago behind Mondo Duplantis. At the 2024 European Championships, Greece won one gold and two silver medals, with Katerina Stefanidi taking silver in the women's pole vault.
Stefanidi, the Olympic gold medalist from Rio de Janeiro, is making her seventh appearance at the tournament. Triple jumper Dimitris Tsiamis, aged 44, is the most experienced member of the squad, preparing for his eighth European Outdoor Championship. Five other team members are appearing for the fifth time: Alexandros Papamichail, Michail Anastasakis, Antigoni Ntrismpioti, Kristy Anagnostopoulou, and Stamatia Scarveli.
Due to the size of the Greek team, the only individual events without Greek representation in either the men's or women's divisions are the 1,500 meters, 5,000 meters, 10,000 meters, and 3,000-meter steeplechase.
