American billionaire Jeff Bezos has joined an investment consortium that bought nearly 40 percent of Liverpool Football Club from Fenway Sports Group, according to a report by The Athletic.
The consortium, 1892 Holdings, is led and directed by former Queens Park Rangers co-owner Amit Bhatia. Sources familiar with the deal told the publication that the group acquired an estimated 38 percent stake in Liverpool, with Bhatia set to take over as vice-chairman at the club.
Initial suggestions from both sides of the transaction indicated that the purchased share was between 30 percent and one third. However, sources confirmed that the final figure was significantly higher, reaching close to 40 percent.
Bezos serves as chief executive officer and chairman of the board at Amazon.com. He was named the richest person in the world from 2018 to 2021, and his wealth was estimated at 250 billion dollars in 2026.
Management changes and squad rebuild
The deal comes as Liverpool look to rebuild following a disappointing season in which they finished fifth in the Premier League table. Despite major squad reinforcements made in the summer of 2025, former manager Arne Slot failed to defend the national championship.
Slot was subsequently replaced by Andoni Iraola, who joined the club following a successful spell as manager of Bournemouth.
Liverpool have completed three incoming transfers ahead of the new season. Spanish winger Victor Munoz joined from Osasuna for 40 million euros, while defender Jeremy Jacquet arrived from French side Rennes for 63.6 million euros. The club also secured defender Ronald Araujo on loan from Barcelona.
Premier League title race and opening fixtures
The new Premier League season begins shortly, with Arsenal attempting to defend their league title. Arsenal secured the championship at the end of last season after finishing ahead of rivals Manchester City and Manchester United.
Liverpool will open their campaign on August 23 at 17:30, facing Newcastle United in an away fixture.
