Lech Poznan earned a narrow 1-0 win over Faroese side Klaksvik in their Europa League qualifying first leg at Enea Stadion on Thursday. Substitute Yannick Agnero scored the decisive goal in the 81st minute before running toward the home supporters alongside teammate Terry Yegbe.
After the final whistle, the Polish champions approached the stands to face their fans. Supporters delivered a direct message to the squad, calling on the players to get their act together ahead of the return fixture.
Only 16,541 spectators attended the match in Poznan due to a partial stadium closure imposed by UEFA for pyrotechnics use. The atmosphere differed sharply from 12 months earlier on August 6, 2025, when a sold-out crowd filled Enea Stadion and packed the line 6 tram for a Champions League qualifier against Red Star Belgrade.
Before kickoff, one supporter outside the stadium said the team had an obligation to reach the Europa League group stage and avoid playing teams like Lincoln. Fans remained stung by a painful elimination against Aarhus, though many held out hope that the club would take its first step toward European group football this autumn.
Coach suspension and early chances
Lech played without head coach Niels Frederiksen on the touchline after UEFA handed him a one-match suspension. Club spokesman Adrian Galuszka explained that responsibility fell on the head coach after the squad arrived late to the tunnel during the Aarhus tie, leaving assistant coach Andreas Hagen to take charge on the official match sheet.
The Polish side started brightly, recording six shots in the opening 20 minutes. Forward Allahyar Sayyadmanesh saw a close-range effort instinctively saved by Klaksvik goalkeeper Mark Jensen before hitting the crossbar via a deflection, while Jensen also denied Antoni Kozubal following a setup by Joel Pereira.
Klaksvik then dropped deep into their own half to defend their position, while Lech struggled to create further openings. Midfielders Antoni Kozubal, Pablo Rodriguez, and Radoslaw Murawski failed to generate speed or surprise, prompting angry shouts from a supporter near the press box and loud whistles from the crowd as the team left the field at halftime.
Late winner and European stakes
Lech's coaching staff replaced Murawski with the offensive-minded Luis Palma at halftime, but the pattern of play remained slow until the closing stages. Agnero finally broke the deadlock in the 81st minute by beating Jensen, sparing the hosts a second embarrassing result in the space of a week.
As Sport.pl columnist Michal Trela noted before the game, progressing remains a requirement for the Poznan club. A Polish side last reached the Europa League main stage in 2023, when Rakow was eliminated after playing Atalanta, Sturm Graz, and Sporting. Lech previously enjoyed a famous run to the round of 32 in the 2010-11 season, defeating Manchester City 3-1, drawing 3-3 and 1-1 with Juventus, beating RB Salzburg twice, and eventually falling to Sporting Braga.
To recreate such a campaign, Lech must protect their 1-0 advantage in the second leg on August 13 on the Faroe Islands before taking on the winner of the tie between FC Thun and Vikingur Reykjavik in the fourth qualifying round.
