Max Verstappen has officially signed a new contract with Oracle Red Bull Racing until 2030, ending speculation over the four-time world champion's Formula 1 future.
The deal was formally announced on Thursday morning, August 20, following months of increasing tension between the Dutch driver and the team over on-track performance.
Verstappen has endured a difficult 18-month spell on the grid, losing his four-year reign as the top driver to Lando Norris. In the current season, he has regularly fallen behind drivers from Mercedes and Ferrari, leading him to complain repeatedly that Red Bull no longer provides a car capable of competing with the rest of the field.
Formula 1 is the highest category of international single-seater auto racing. Competitors race for individual driver honours and constructor championships, with Mercedes, Ferrari, and Norris's McLaren team operating as Red Bull's chief rivals.
Transfer speculation
The frustration surrounding Red Bull's form sparked widespread rumours about Verstappen's future. Media reports linked him with potential moves to rival teams including Aston Martin, Mercedes, and McLaren. It was also reported that Mark Mateschitz, one of Red Bull's oldest shareholders, favoured ending the working relationship with the driver.
Red Bull Racing was established after the energy drink manufacturer acquired an existing Formula 1 team. Mark Mateschitz holds a major ownership stake in the Austrian company, which manages extensive global sports and motorsport operations.
However, chief executive Oliver Mintzlaff held a different view and pushed for Verstappen to sign an extension through to 2030. Mintzlaff's stance proved decisive during a turbulent period that had appeared to point toward Verstappen leaving the team.
Social media teaser
Red Bull Racing confirmed the agreement in a social media video that initially appeared to announce Verstappen's departure from the team.
The clip featured an email draft from team principal Laurent Mekies with the subject line stating that Max resigns. Verstappen then corrected Mekies, pointing out that a hyphen was missing from the second word and changing the title from resigns to re-signs in a clever play on words.
Sixteen years with Red Bull
If Verstappen completes the agreement through 2030, he will reach a total of 16 years with the Red Bull organization. He first joined the Red Bull Junior Team in 2014 before making his senior debut for Red Bull Racing two years later in 2016.
At the age of 18 years and 228 days, Verstappen became the youngest driver ever to win a Formula 1 race, as well as the first Dutch driver to achieve a victory in the sport. The Red Bull Junior Team is an established talent academy designed to develop young drivers for Formula 1 competition.
