Carlos Sainz signs multi-year Williams Formula 1 contract

Four-time Grand Prix winner Carlos Sainz has signed a multi-year contract extension with the Williams Formula 1 team in London, ending speculation surrounding his racing future.

The announcement on Wednesday comes just 24 hours after Williams confirmed that his teammate, Thai driver Alex Albon, was also renewed for the 2027 campaign.

The 31-year-old Spaniard, a former driver for both Ferrari and McLaren, is enduring a difficult season in which he has yet to score a point, but has chosen to commit his future to Williams for the upcoming years.

Sainz declared that he was excited to continue his journey with the Williams family. He said he sincerely believes in the personnel across the team, both at the factory and at the races, as well as in the investment and hard work taking place behind the scenes.

He added that the team possesses what it takes to turn the situation around together. Sainz emphasized that he remains as committed as he was on day one to help restore Williams to its rightful position and said he looks forward to creating more memories with the squad.

Williams driver lineup secured

The contract extension arrives directly ahead of the Dutch Grand Prix and brings welcome relief to Williams team principal James Vowles as the team prepares for the upcoming race weekend.

Vowles stated that Sainz shares the belief and ambition held at Williams and pushes every day to achieve those goals. He expressed confidence that alongside Albon, Williams possesses one of the strongest driver pairings on the grid and a team capable of fighting together for every fraction of performance.

Background and team context

Williams Racing, based in Grove, Oxfordshire, is one of Formula 1's most historic constructors, having won nine constructors' championships. The team has been undergoing a long-term overhaul under Vowles in an effort to return to competitiveness in motorsport's premier championship.

The Formula 1 paddock heads to Zandvoort for the Dutch Grand Prix following the traditional summer break, with Williams aiming to claim its first points of the current season.
