Newcastle United secured a 2-0 victory away against Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League on Saturday following second-half goals from Anthony Elanga and Yoane Wissa.

The result lifted Newcastle United up to third place in the top half of the Premier League standings, while Tottenham Hotspur dropped to rock bottom of the table after failing to score at home.

Following a goalless first half at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, Elanga broke the deadlock in the 62nd minute to put the visiting side ahead.

Wissa doubled the advantage ten minutes later in the 72nd minute, producing an acrobatic overhead kick finish past the Tottenham goalkeeper to secure all three points for Newcastle.

Spaniard midfielder Nico Gonzalez made his first start for Newcastle United just four days after joining the club, operating in central midfield where he faced Italian midfielder Sandro Tonali on the opposite team before Tonali was substituted.

Gonzalez played a key role in setting up Newcastle's opening goal after executing a pass he had practiced with the coaching staff during his first days at the club.

"It was amazing. I have been four days here so it wasn't easy for me to start but I am really happy for the work I have done and the team has done," Gonzalez told BBC Sport. "The idea in the second half was the same but we made a few adjustments and were a little more aggressive on them. I think that this group has so much potential, we are really young and have so much space to improve."

Newcastle manager reactions and match plan

Newcastle United manager Matthias Jaissle expressed his pride in the squad's performance, noting that the win followed a strong display against Liverpool the previous week.

"It was incredible and I'm really proud. We are really proud as a club, as a coaching staff to see a team on the pitch delivering the match plan at a high level already, but also seeing players fully committed to what we're doing," Jaissle told Sky Sports.

"The DNA of Newcastle United is a good fit to the playing style I like to see, so therefore I already saw in the past some similarities. Now we've used the time in the best efficient way and I'm proud to see that working already," Jaissle added.

Tottenham home record and De Zerbi response

The defeat continued Tottenham Hotspur's poor home form, with the North London club having won just three of their last 23 Premier League home matches going back to April 7, 2025.

Across their last 14 home league games in that period, Tottenham scored 24 goals while conceding 41 times. In contrast, Manchester City won 19 home matches in that span, relegated West Ham United recorded six home wins, and League One side Leicester City claimed two home victories.

Tottenham manager Roberto De Zerbi, whose team news confirmed that winger Savio was omitted from the matchday squad, urged calm following the loss.

"I think for 65 minutes we played better than Newcastle, we had a chance to score and didn't score. And then after the goal we lost the distances," De Zerbi told Sky Sports. "We had more control of the ball, we can improve in the defensive phase with the distances."

"We will not panic. I know very well where we are going, what the plan is and what difficult problems we could find in our way," De Zerbi added, noting that changing the trajectory of the previous two seasons requires patience when adapting to a new project.

Head to head record and pundit analysis

Saturday's result extended Newcastle United's recent dominant head-to-head record against Tottenham Hotspur.

Across the last five Premier League seasons since 2022-23, Newcastle have won seven of their nine league meetings with Tottenham, recording one draw and one defeat. Only Manchester City have recorded more victories against a single opponent in the competition over that period, with eight wins against Fulham.

Former Tottenham midfielder Jamie Redknapp offered analysis on Sky Sports, praising the contributions of goalscorers Wissa and Elanga following difficult spells.

"I'm so pleased for Wissa and players who have had a really tough time like Elanga," Redknapp said. "Last season was so difficult and they probably thought a few times 'have I made the right move here'. But these are the days that make you think it was worth it. You play for a huge club like Newcastle, and even though they've lost players, this team will always survive."

Former Chelsea goalkeeper Rob Green praised the tactical display on BBC Radio 5 Live, calling it "the perfect away performance" and stating that Newcastle "utilised their new signing Nico Gonzalez to perfection."
