Except for the opening quarter, the Greek team maintained complete control of the EuroLeague encounter at the Buesa Arena in Vitoria-Gasteiz. Tyler Dorsey led the scoring with 25 points, while Sasha Vezenkov contributed 22 points as the primary protagonists for head coach Georgios Bartzokas.
Bartzokas has placed greater emphasis on a fast offensive pace this season, aided by the arrival of Jean Montero, a player who offers speed and playmaking in attack. Montero's arrival gives the Piraeus club additional creativity in transition.
Olympiacos enter the fixture following a high-scoring 101-96 victory over PAOK to claim the Greek Super Cup, the traditional season-opening domestic trophy. Vezenkov delivered another strong performance in that final with 25 points and 10 rebounds, while Montero recorded 20 points and five assists, and Evan Fournier added 19 points.
Squad rotation and travel demands
The Super Cup tournament required significant energy from Olympiacos, and the subsequent journey to Lithuania presents additional physical hurdles. With EuroLeague fixtures scheduled every two days during double-game weeks, player workload across the squad is heightened.
To manage the heavy fixture list, Olympiacos added experienced center Bryant Dunston to their roster. However, Serbian center Nikola Milutinov did not travel with the squad for the EuroLeague's first double-game week. Milutinov remained behind in Athens to undergo treatment for a tendonitis issue.
Zalgiris momentum and roster changes
Zalgiris Kaunas opened their continental campaign in positive fashion, securing an 83-77 road victory in Belgrade. The result carried double significance, securing a crucial away win while offering early proof that substantial off-season roster changes can pay off quickly.
Veteran center Jonas Valanciunas provided a new dimension to the Lithuanian side's frontcourt, finishing the contest with 13 points and eight rebounds. Nigel Williams-Goss produced 14 points and six assists, while guard Carsen Edwards remains a threat capable of dismantling defensive setups when finding his range.
Zalgiris followed up their continental win with a comfortable 101-82 domestic victory over Siauliai in the Lithuanian league. The team avoided expending excessive energy during the domestic clash, providing an additional boost ahead of the demanding EuroLeague schedule.
However, Williams-Goss will miss Zalgiris fixtures for approximately 15 days after suffering a muscle strain, leaving a key vacancy in the coaching staff's plans. Furthermore, guard Saben Lee remains doubtful for the match, with coach Tomas Masiulis set to make the final decision shortly before tip-off.
